The courses in this department meet the English requirement for graduation, as well as the University of California and California State University entrance requirements.
English I | LA108 | Grade 9 | Year
This course emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development and preparation for standardized testing.
Honors English I | LA108H | Grade 9 | Year
Prerequisite: All students are require teacher recommendation before consideration.
This is an intensified course that emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development and preparation for standardized testing.
English II | LA119 | Grade 10 | Year
This course emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres from World Literature and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development and preparation for standardized testing.
Honors English II | LA119H | Grade 10 | Year
Prerequisite: All students are require teacher recommendation before consideration.
This is an intensified course emphasizing advanced skill in writing, reading comprehension and vocabulary study through the in-depth study of a variety of literary genre Study /test skills will be reinforced. Emphasis is on World Literature.
English III | LA121 | Grade 11 | Year
This course emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres from American Literature and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development and preparation for standardized testing.
AP English | LA121H | Grade 11 | Year
Language and Composition
Prerequisite: GPA and SBAC score of proficient or above in Language Arts. Grade of “B” or better in English II. All students are require teacher recommendation before consideration.
This is an intensified course that emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres from American Literature and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development, preparation for the Advanced Placement Test Students who take this course are strongly advised to take the College Board AP English exam at an approximate cost of $100. For students eligible for fee waiver the cost of the test is $10.00.

This course emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres from British Literature and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development and preparation for standardized testing.
AP English | LA107H | Grade 12 | Year
Literature and Composition
Prerequisite: GPA and SBAC score of proficient or above in Language Arts. Grade of “B” or better in English III. All students are require teacher recommendation before consideration.
This is an intensified course that emphasizes selections from a variety of literary genres from British Literature and is designed to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, research, study skills, vocabulary development, preparation for the Advanced Placement Test in English, Literature and Composition, and other standardized tests. Intended for students who are at the beginning level of English Language Development. The class will emphasize listening skills and vocabulary development.
ELD II | LA130 | Grades 9-12 | Year
Intended for students who are at the Early Intermediate Level or Intermediate Level of ELD. The class will emphasize speaking skill and vocabulary development. This course may be repeated for credit.
ELD III | LA133 | Grades 9-12 | Year
Intended for students who are at the Intermediate or Early Advanced Level of ELD. Students must have completed most/all transition criteria. The class will emphasize reading and vocabulary development. This course may be repeated for credit.
