AHS SMASIS Collaboration

Azusa High School (AHS) Academy of Engineering SMASIS Collaboration

Azusa High School (AHS) Academy of Engineering SMASIS Collaboration

Our second year academy students had the opportunity to create and submit a project to the annual American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS).

ASME is a non-profit professional organization founded in 1880 that fosters the collaboration, knowledge dissemination, and training across all engineering disciplines and includes more than 140,000 members in 151 countries. The ASME SMASIS conference is a leading meeting on smart structures and intelligent materials systems that attracts more than 300 professional attendees each year with over 250 technical presentations. SMASIS provides a unique forum that brings together industry and government scientists, faculty, and students from mechanical, aerospace, and civil engineering, materials science, and mathematics whose research spans areas in smart structures and intelligent material systems. More information about ASME and SMASIS can be found at https://www.asme.org/about-asme and https://event.asme.org/SMASIS/About.

With the professional guidance of Dr. Kazuko Fuchi (Research Engineer, University of Dayton Research Institute) and Prof. Edwin A. Peraza Hernandez (Assistant Professor, University of California, Irvine) and expert advice from Prof. Euihark Lee (Assistant Professor, Michigan State University), AHS students took on a project to develop packaging designs that would limit damage to eggs during transportation and storage. Students used origami concepts and techniques to design and fabricate their packaging ideas. Students were given constraints to their design as they successfully tested their construction.  A select group of students will have the opportunity to present their design solutions in this year’s SMASIS conference that will be held in September 2021.

Throughout the project, students learned vital engineering and soft skills that will aid in their pursuit in either attending college or a career in a technical field.  This project was especially difficult considering the challenge of completing tasks remotely. This is one of the goals of the AHS Academy of Engineering.  In the following year, these students will dive deep into another project involving soft robotics. Everybody at AHS is proud of these students and thank all who helped throughout the project.

Please take time to view our student’s presentations linked.  Also linked our bios of our great sponsors who were a tremendous help.
